Network Cabling:

Network cabling is creating the medium through which information transferred between the computer, routers, switches and storage area networks. Cabling process is done with the help of the network's topology, protocol, and size. The type of cable chosen for a network is related to the business and environment. Understand the business and size then choose different types of cable to make a successful network. Network cables are essential to building a successful network for data flows.

There are different types of communications cables, the appropriate usage of cables depend on the structure and topology of the architecture of the system.

Types of Network Cabling:

Unshielded twisted pair cables:

A type of copper cable that consists of two unshielded wires twisted around each other. Due to its low cost, UTP cabling is used extensively for local-area networks (LANs) and telephone connections. Twisted pair cable is typically used in office environments, retail, and commercial sites and it prevents interference from other devices and indeed from other adjacent cables.

Advantages:
  • Little Inexpensive
  • Familiar and simple to install
Disadvantages:
  • Limited bandwidth
  • Lower transmissions

Fiber optic cable:

Fiber optic cabling typically used in hospital, airports, banks are specified where high bandwidths and high capacity installation may be needed. Fiber optic cabling is the fastest medium of choice for any installation that is sending high volumes of data. Technology that uses glass or plastic threads (fiber optic cable) to transmit data which consists of a bundle of glass threads, each of which is capable of transmitting messages modulated onto light waves.

Disadvantages:
  • Little higher cost of installation

Shielded Twisted Pair (STP) Cable:

Shielded Twisted Pair (STP) Cable is a copper wiring, each pair covered by an additional copper braid jacket or foil wrapping. This shielding helps protect the signals on the cables from external interference which is electromagnetic interference leaking into or out of the cable. STP cabling often is used in Ethernet networks, especially fast data rate Ethernets.

Advantages:
  • Easy installation
  • Reasonable
  • Cost
  • Resistance to interference better electrical characteristics than
  • Unshielded cables
Disadvantages:
  • No longer produced due to technical advances

Coaxial cables:

Coaxial cable is a type of copper shielded cable used in computer networks and to deliver cable TV services to end users specially built with a metal shield to block signal interference. It is primarily used by cable TV companies to connect their satellite antenna facilities to customer homes and businesses.

Advantages:
  • Familiar and fairly easy to install
  • Lower attenuation and great bandwidth than shielded or unshielded cables
  • Easy to connect
Disadvantages:
  • Less security
